Split rail fence in a wooded yard

Guides

Before you build

Find your rules first

Check three things: your jurisdiction (The Woodlands, Houston, Humble, or the county), your flood zone, and your HOA or deed restrictions. All three can change what you're allowed to build. Our service area pages summarize each.

Know your property line

A survey shows where your lot ends and any easements. Fences in easements are at your risk, and in The Woodlands they need the easement holder's approval.

Plan around trees

Route the fence around trunks and give roots room. Never fasten a fence to a tree. In The Woodlands, trees over 6 inches can't be removed for a fence.

Why posts fail

Most fences fail at the posts: too shallow, too little concrete, or set in wet ground without drainage. Ask any contractor how deep and how much concrete.

Storm prep and damage

Before hurricane season, fix loose boards and leaning posts, and trim limbs over the fence. After a storm, photograph damage before cleanup for insurance.

Keep wood looking good

Aim sprinklers away from the fence, keep soil and mulch off the boards, and restain every few years.
