Fences for Cochran's Crossing
The center of The Woodlands, opened in 1983 and home to The Woodlands Country Club.
About Cochran's Crossing
Golf, greenbelts, and the middle of town
Cochran's Crossing opened in 1983. It's named for the Cochran family of Montgomery County, who co-owned the Grogan-Cochran Lumber Company and much of the land The Woodlands was built on. The village sits in the heart of The Woodlands, around Research Forest Drive, Lake Woodlands Drive, and Cochran's Crossing Drive, in ZIP 77381.
The Woodlands Country Club is here, along with its Palmer Course, which opened in 1990. So are The Woodlands Recreation Center and Bear Branch and Shadowbend parks.
For fences, that means a mix of golf course lots, greenbelt lots, and standard interior yards, many with fences from the 1980s and 1990s. Each type has its own limits. The Cochran's Crossing Residential Design Review Committee reviews new fences and larger repairs.
What works here
Fences that suit Cochran's Crossing
Golf course steel
Powder-coated steel along the fairway side keeps the view, meets the rear-line rule, and doesn't need staining.
Ornamental steel →Board-on-board privacy
For interior lots, stained board-on-board cedar gives full privacy within the 7'6" solid fence limit.
Privacy fences →Stain and refresh
A sound older fence can look new again with a cleaning and a transparent or semi-transparent stain from the Township's pre-approved list.
Staining & washing →Plan first
Before you fence in Cochran's Crossing
- Approvals. New fences and repairs over 8 linear feet need written approval from the Cochran's Crossing RDRC through the Civic Access Portal.
- Golf course lots. No solid fence on the rear line. Plan on see-through steel up to 6'6".
- Greenbelts. Fences stay on your lot, never in a greenbelt or open space reserve.
- Permits. The village is in unincorporated Montgomery County. A county floodplain development permit applies only in a mapped floodplain. We check the map for your address.
- Trees. Trees over 6 inches in diameter can't be removed for a fence.
- Texas 811. We request utility locates before every dig.
Community and county rules change. We confirm what applies to your address before we quote, and we don't build until approvals are in hand.

Questions
Cochran's Crossing fence questions
Do you serve Cochran's Crossing?
Yes. Our office is at 1401 Lake Plaza Dr in Spring, just off I-45 near The Woodlands, and Cochran’s Crossing sits right in the middle of The Woodlands.
My lot is on the Palmer Course. Can I fence the back?
Yes, but not with a solid fence on the rear line. The Township standards don’t allow solid fences along the rear property line of golf course lots. Powder-coated steel up to 6’6” is the usual fit.
My yard backs to a greenbelt. Can the fence go to the edge of the trees?
Only to your property line. Fences can’t go in open space reserves or greenbelts, so we confirm the line from your survey before we set posts.
My neighbor and I want to split a new fence. Which side gets the finished face?
The finished side faces the neighbor or the street. A good-neighbor fence that alternates sides needs your neighbor’s written consent, unless you’re replacing one that’s already there.
How long does approval take?
The Cochran’s Crossing RDRC meets monthly, so plan around the Township’s submittal deadlines. We get the drawing and details ready so the application is complete the first time.
